Background of the Study

Anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria, such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have been pivotal in tackling corruption at both national and local levels. In Ilorin East Local Government Area (LGA) in Kwara State, the EFCC has undertaken various interventions aimed at curbing corruption, particularly in public administration and governance. These interventions have included investigations into the misuse of public funds, asset recovery, and public awareness campaigns (Jibrin & Uthman, 2023). However, despite these efforts, corruption remains a significant challenge, raising questions about the effectiveness of the EFCC's local interventions. This study seeks to appraise the impact of EFCC’s anti-corruption efforts in Ilorin East LGA, examining how well these interventions have addressed corruption at the local level and their implications for governance and accountability.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The EFCC’s local interventions in Ilorin East LGA, while laudable, have been criticized for their limited reach, inadequate resources, and challenges in securing convictions (Adeoye & Sulaimon, 2024). Despite efforts to combat corruption, local government officials and politicians continue to engage in corrupt practices with minimal fear of prosecution. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the EFCC’s efforts in Ilorin East LGA, identify the challenges faced by the agency, and assess the impact of these interventions on local governance.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of EFCC’s anti-corruption interventions in Ilorin East LGA.

  2. To examine the challenges faced by the EFCC in combating corruption at the local government level.

  3. To explore the impact of EFCC’s interventions on governance and accountability in Ilorin East LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How effective have the EFCC’s anti-corruption interventions been in Ilorin East LGA?

  2. What challenges does the EFCC face in tackling corruption at the local government level?

  3. What impact have the EFCC’s interventions had on governance and public accountability in Ilorin East LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. The EFCC’s anti-corruption interventions have significantly reduced corruption in Ilorin East LGA.

  2. Challenges such as inadequate resources and political interference have limited the effectiveness of the EFCC in Ilorin East LGA.

  3. The EFCC’s interventions have positively influenced governance and accountability in Ilorin East LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to the understanding of the role of anti-corruption agencies, particularly the EFCC, in combating corruption at the local government level. By evaluating the agency’s interventions in Ilorin East LGA, the research will provide insights into the challenges and successes of anti-corruption efforts at the grassroots level. The findings will be useful for policymakers, the EFCC, and civil society organizations working to strengthen local governance and promote accountability.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Ilorin East LGA, Kwara State, and evaluates the impact of EFCC’s anti-corruption interventions within the local government. The research does not address broader state or national anti-corruption efforts or compare EFCC’s work in other LGAs.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Anti-Corruption Agencies: Government bodies, such as the EFCC, tasked with investigating and prosecuting corruption-related offenses.

  • Governance: The process by which local governments manage public resources, make decisions, and ensure accountability in service delivery.

  • Public Accountability: The obligation of public officials and government institutions to be transparent and answerable to the public for their actions and the use of public resources.
